Group Travel Insurance - Weighing the Options

Group Travel Insurance OptionsDomestic Travel Insurance: Weighing the Options

Travel insurance can save your wallet from serious trouble when the unexpected happens on your trip. Many people think of travel insurance as a necessity for international travel, but will skip it for domestic trips. It may be worth investigating for your group's trip, however.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is protection against unexpected events or delays that occur on your trip. It can cover the costs if your group is snowed in in Chicago. It can cover lost or stolen baggage. It can help if you are found liable for damage caused to someone else's property. Depending on the policy, a wide variety of life's unfortunate happenings can be covered.

Domestic versus international travel

Many health insurance plans do not cover medical treatment in other countries, so travel insurance is a must for international travel. For domestic travel, this is not as much of a concern since you are more than likely covered by your health insurance in any state. This difference in scope of coverage does make for a substantial drop in price for domestic insurance, however. This reduction of cost may make it worth your while to check out domestic insurance options.

Group policies

If your group consists of more than a certain number of individuals, many insurers are willing to offer group plans. These plans usually offer discounts over individual plans. A group plan may also look at your group as a group, making no distinctions between the 90-year-olds and nine-year-olds in it.

Your travel insurance policy

Travel insurance policies may cover:

  • Cancellations by your carrier or destination
  • Cancellations made by you for emergency reasons such as a medical professional advising you not to travel or a death or medical emergency in the family
  • Cancellations due to natural disasters at home or your destination
  • Lost, damaged, or stolen items
  • Expenses incurred by your estate should you die while traveling
  • Excess rental car mileage
  • Damage to rental cars
  • Dental costs
  • And more, depending on the policy

Making the right choice

Traveler's insurance is a confusing issue. With such a wide variety of coverage types and drastically varying prices, it can be difficult to choose between them. A good guideline is to choose from one of the larger travel insurance companies, or choose one with either a good reputation or that someone you know has recommended. As with any purchase, comparison shopping and research are bound to save you money and help make sure that you get the best plan for your money. Also, reading the fine print is a must when determining if you need coverage and what kind will serve your group best.
